Buyers see a lot of pitches. The ones that win aren't always from the brands with the best product. They're from brands that make a buyer's job easy: clear on the category opportunity, realistic about the numbers, and ready to support the item after it hits shelf.
Here's how to build a retail sell-in pitch that gets a yes, based on what we've seen work across natural, specialty and conventional grocery.
A buyer manages a category with limited shelf space and a sales target. Every new item replaces something. Your pitch needs to answer one question: why is my set better with you in it?
That means leading with the category trend you're riding, the shopper you bring in, and the gap on their shelf you fill. Your origin story matters, but it belongs later.
Most retailers reset categories on a schedule, and they review new items months before the reset. Pitch outside that window and even a great item can sit until next year. Before you reach out:
Keep it tight. A strong sell-in deck usually covers:
If you're still building the deck, our sales materials work covers sell sheets and line review decks built for buyers.
"We'll support the launch" means nothing. "We'll fund two TPRs in the first six months, run in-store demos in top doors, and target geo-fenced digital ads around your locations" means a lot. Buyers want to know you'll drive shoppers to the shelf, because a slow-moving item makes their category look bad.
Just make sure the plan is funded. Committing to promotions you can't afford is a fast route to a trade spend problem.
Nothing sours a new relationship faster than a brand that wins the placement and can't deliver. Before you pitch, confirm you have distributor access in their region, clean item data, and inventory to cover free fill and the first orders. We cover the prep in our retail readiness checklist.
After the meeting, send a short recap, answer every open question, and ship samples promptly if requested. If the answer is "not now," ask what would change it and when to come back. A "no" this cycle can be a "yes" next review if you return with better velocity.
Buyers say yes to brands that make them look good. Lead with the category, prove demand, show a funded support plan, and be ready to ship.
